The Department of Social Work under the project called “Adolescent Resource Centre supported by UNICEF, RGNIYD organized a two day Round Table Conference on “Areas and Concerns of Adolescent Development – A Policy Perspective” on 21st and 22nd December 2017 at RGNIYD campus. The prime objectives of this Round Table Conference are to analyses the policy and programme framework, so as to provide a comprehensive understanding on the issues of the adolescents, assess the existing policies and programme that a designed to address these issues, identify the gaps in implementation and suggest the way forward. In this conference a total of 48 participants (30 men and 18 women) like practitioners, academicians, scholars, policy researchers and eminent experts participated. Dr. S. Kumaravel, Assistant Professor, RGNIYD welcomed the guests and gave overview of the conference. Professor (Dr.) M.M. Goel, Director RGNIYD while delivering the inaugural address justified the need for developing a policy framework and acknowledges the importance of a multidimensional approach with spiritual inputs from the epics including Gita, Anu-Gita, Quran and Bible. Professor Goel told that the bad behaviour including theft, vandalism and arson is caused by the pollution of all kinds, strained relations of the parents, peer pressure, single parents and single child syndrome, Bollywood movies and TV serials including KBC by polluting the mind-sets of adolescents. The steps-children have their own problems and must be addressed with empathy, believe the Director RGNIYD. The children of single parents are the victims of social denials of many kinds which need to be diagnosed and analysed said Prof Goel. To respond to the multi-faceted needs of adolescents in India, policymaking involves prioritisation which should stem from an analysis of the current situation and dispassionate assessment of the capability and capacity of the system for implementation, stated Prof.Goel. The areas of concerns on adolescent like physical and mental health, areas of adolescent development in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in education and local governance were discussed and deliberated in the plenary sessions. Dr. S. Kumaravel, Assistant Professor, and Principal Investigator organized the programme.
