Government of India (GOI) through Swachh Bharat Campaign has been promoting sanitation coverage to ensure better health and quality of life for people in rural India. To add vigour to its implementation, Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development launched an award Viz; ‘Swachh Panchayat Award’ based on the efforts made by village panchayats in making fully sanitized and open defecation free Gram Panchayats. On request, DRDA Kanchipuram and Tiruvllur nominated three village panchayats each for the First Swachh Panchayat Award Constituted by RGNIYD. On the day award ceremony six village panchayats viz, Kattupakkam, Orakkadu, Papprambakkam of Tiruvallur Districts and Vallakottai, Melpakkam and Vellaputhur of Kancheepuram District received the awards. Department of Local Governance organised the function.

2 Swachh Bharth Pakhwada – NSS Unit RGNIYD2017-08-03 to 2017-08-04RGNIYD

To spread awareness on cleanliness as part of its ‘Swachhta Abhiyan’, the Ministry of Youth Affairs &Sports, Govt. of India/ Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD) is celebrating Swachh Bharat Pakhwada from 1st -15th August 2017 and is undertaking various activities under this campaign. In this context, the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of RGNIYD conducted following activities; On the third and fourth day of Swachh Bharath Pakhwada ,(3-4th August, 2017) NSS unit of RGNIYD organised Campus and taluk hospital cleanliness drive respectively. On third August, Prof (Dr) Madan Mohan Goel, Director, RGNIYD inaugurated the campus cleanliness drive and Around 160 volunteers of National Service Scheme (NSS) got into action. They cleared plastic and other solid waste littered along the 43 acre stretch of the Rajiv Gandhi Natinal Institute of Youth Development with special thrust on residential areas like, boys hostel and girls hostel premises. The NSS unit of RGNIYD aims to take the Swachh Bahart mission to the next level to enhance the environmental awareness and initiatives should be taken to inculcate green energy and ensure correct waste management practices amongst the NSS volunteers and faculties through regular sustainable programmes on the importance of hygienic surroundings in community living. On fourth August NSS unit of RGNIYD undertook a cleanliness drive in the premises of Taluk Government Hospital of Sriperumbudur under the ongoing Swachh Bharat Pakhwada. Around 69 volunteers of the NSS unit led by Dr.P.H Kalesh, Programme Coordinator participated in the cleanliness drive both in the inpatient and administrative block of the hospital. During the cleanliness campaign, nine packets of garbage were collected. Mostly they were in the form of tree leaves and biodegradable in nature. One packet of miscellaneous garbage was also collected. All these garbage packets were handed over to the caretaker of hospital administration for proper utilisation/disposal of the garbage including for the purpose of composting.
