RGNIYD Regional Centre, Chandigarh

The RGNIYD in its endeavour to reach out to more number of young people across the country established a regional centre (RC) at Chandigarh in March 2014. It was visualised that the centre would effectively facilitate training of youth, NSS and NYKS personnel and volunteers, central and state government officials engaged in youth development work and functionaries of NGOs in the northern states. Since its establishment, the RC has been discharging its duties in consonance with the mandate of the RGNIYD. As the regional arm of the premier youth development institute, it has expanded and invigorated its (institutes) training base and component by connecting to the youth population of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Rajasthan on a large scale.  The RC also organizes training programmes in the North East region, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Odisha. Within a short period of four years it could forge a meaningful partnership with universities, central and state government organizations, international organizations and NGOs, thus deepening its engagement with the cause of youth development.

The RC contains three wings. They are i) training, ii) administration/finance and iii) IT lab. The training wing prepares the annual training plan, designs the delivery methods, sets the agenda and organises programmes at various places in collaboration with the NSS, NYKS, universities, and NGOs. The IT lab offers courses in IT and soft skills to hundreds of students from low-income groups in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh and Skill Development Corporation, Chandigarh. Training of youth in both citizenship issues and IT has added lustre to the RCs profile.

The RC is on a 5.41 acres plot of land adjacent to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER). It can boast of a reasonably sound infrastructure which includes three well-equipped training halls, a 30 roomed hostel, a small library (with over 6000 titles and eight journals), badminton and volleyball courts, modern kitchen, and a spacious dining hall. Located in pleasant environs of one of the most picturesque cities in India the campus sports a green look with mango orchards and well-maintained lawns. Apart from meticulously implementing its agenda the RC also accords primacy to social justice, ecological concerns, and cleanliness.
